The sweat that accompanies prolonged exercise leads to a loss of electrolytes and water from the body, especially when practiced at high temperatures. If lost water and electrolytes are not replaced, the athlete can become dehydrated. Dehydration is enough to be equal to or greater than 2% of body weight to affect performance and lead to a loss of strength and speed, have negative repercussions on the cardiovascular system, on body temperature regulation, on cognitive and mental performance (reduces the ability to concentrate, increases levels of fatigue), and in increasing the use of muscle glycogen.
